The Kremlin said on Wednesday that the U.S. opening a new missile base in Poland shows that the U.S. military infrastructure is advancing towards our borders, as part of the U.S. military containment of Russia. The U.S. base in Redzikowo, called "Aegis Ashore," is part of the NATO missile defense system. NATO says the defense system can intercept short- to medium-range ballistic missiles. Kremlin spokesman Peskov said that as early as the 2000s, when George W. Bush was president of the United States, President Putin had opposed the plan for the base. The U.S. claimed at the time that its purpose was to intercept potential Iranian missiles, which was simply a lie.
