Odaily Planet Daily News According to the theft of 482 billion yen worth of BTC by the encryption asset (Virtual Money) exchange DMM Bitcoin, the Japanese police department announced on December 24th that the incident was caused by the North Korean-based cyber attack group TraderTraitor. South Korea has announced that the criminal facts have been determined. Through a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3), the agency identified the perpetrator of the 4,502.9 BTC theft that occurred in May 2024. TraderTraitor is believed to be affiliated with the North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group, and this attack was carried out in multiple stages. The Police Department stated that it will continue to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, other US government agencies, and international partners to investigate the illegal activities of North Korean hackers, including network crimes and theft of encryption assets. At the same time, the Police Department, the Cabinet Cybersecurity Center, and the Ministry of Finance have issued documents on the methods and countermeasures of the attacking group, urging caution for enterprises related to encryption assets. In response to the leak, DMM Bitcoin has decided to close its exchange. Assets and customer accounts will be transferred to SBIVC Trade, with the transition expected to be completed by March 2025.
