The Bitcoin halving is a programmed event in the Bitcoin protocol that occurs approximately every four years. During the halving, the reward that miners receive for each block they validate is halved. For example, if the reward was 12.5 bitcoins before the halving, it becomes 6.25 bitcoins after. This gradually reduces the amount of new bitcoins put into circulation, which helps to maintain the scarcity of the cryptocurrency and control its inflation.
