Zhao Changpeng's life trajectory is filled with legendary colors. From a Canadian international student to the founder of the world's largest encryption cryptocurrency exchange, his story witnesses the rise and fall of the encryption industry.
In 1989, 12-year-old Zhao Changpeng moved to Vancouver with his father, beginning his overseas journey. In 1995, he enrolled at McGill University, first studying biology and then switching to computer science. At the age of 20, he interned at the Tokyo Stock Exchange and then followed in the footsteps of Bill Gates, dropping out to focus entirely on programming.
In 2001, Zhao Changpeng joined Bloomberg to develop trading software. In 2005, at the age of 28, he left Bloomberg and returned to Shanghai to start his own business. He founded Fusion Systems, a company that provides high-frequency trading SaaS systems. This experience laid the foundation for his later establishment of Binance.
In 2013, Zhao Changpeng was introduced to Bitcoin through a friend. Since then, he has immersed himself in the encryption industry, working at Blockchain.info and another trading platform. In 2014, he met He Yi, who would later become the co-founder of Binance.
In June 2017, Binance was officially established. With the support of He Yi's operational capabilities, Binance became the world's largest encryption cryptocurrency exchange in just 165 days. In 2018, Zhao Changpeng entered the Forbes cryptocurrency billionaire list with a net worth of $2 billion.
However, in March 2023, Zhao Changpeng was sued by the United States for violating anti-money laundering regulations. He eventually resigned as CEO of Binance and was briefly imprisoned in April 2024. After his release, the 47-year-old Zhao Changpeng settled in the UAE, focusing on educational charity and blockchain investment.
Zhao Changpeng's experience showcases the ups and downs of the encryption industry. He entered with technical expertise and promoted the popularity of cryptocurrencies through Binance. Although he has faced setbacks recently, he is still exploring new applications of blockchain technology. As a veteran in the industry, Zhao Changpeng's future moves are worth paying attention to.
