SoftBank acquired a factory in Osaka for $676 million for its collaboration with OpenAI in Japan
On March 14, according to TechCrunch, SoftBank confirmed that it will spend $676 million (about 100 billion yen) to acquire Sharp's Sakai factory in Osaka, planning to transform the factory that was once used to produce LCD panels into an artificial intelligence data center.
The data center is a key step in SoftBank's partnership with OpenAI in Japan. The two companies have previously formed a joint venture, SB OpenAI Japan, to deploy an enterprise-grade AI service called "Cristal Intelligence" in the Japanese market.
According to Nikkei, OpenAI will develop a base model using the factory's graphics processor and train it with data from customer marketing campaigns, and then sell customized AI agents to customers.
